Nutrient co‐limitation in the subtropical Northwest Pacific

چکیده

Nutrients limiting phytoplankton growth in the ocean are a critical control on productivity and can underpin predicted responses to climate change. The extensive western subtropical North Pacific is assumed be under strong nitrogen limitation, but this not well supported by experimental evidence. Here, we report results of 14 factorial nitrogen–phosphorus–iron addition experiments through Philippine Sea, which demonstrate gradient from limitation north nitrogen–iron co-limitation south. While limited sites responded weakly nutrient supply, co-limited bloomed with up ~60-fold increases chlorophyll biomass that was dominated initially undetectable diatoms. transition nutrients capacity driven deep water surface concentration fields. We hypothesize large-scale response both sensitive potentially important for regulating distribution predatory fish.

Northwest Pacific subtropical countercurrent on isopycnal surface in summer

[1] A three-dimensional absolute velocity field on the isopycnal surface in the northwest Pacific subtropical region in the summer is calculated from the Navy’s Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM) climatological temperature and salinity data on a 0.5 0.5 grid using the P-vector method. GDEM for the area was built from historical (1930–1997) temperature and salinity profiles. The basi...

Nutrient Cycling in Forests of the Pacific Northwest

Ecosystem analysis has established nutrient cycling as an important area of ecology involving biological, chemical, and geological interactions. Studying the flow of elements through ecosystems provides us with a tool for understanding the functioning of ecosystems. For example, if an ecosystem component has a rapid flux of elements through it, or if it stores large amounts of an element, that ...

Pacific Northwest Fungi

Epiphytic macrolichen communities were compared among forest stand types in the Blue River watershed of western Oregon. Stand types were defined by stand structure, according to age classes of the younger tree cohort and remnant tree retention. Remnant trees were those in an older cohort that remained following a stand disturbance that initiated tree regeneration, such as a timber harvest or na...
